Faith and Works – PODCAST

Faith = Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

Strong belief in God, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

Note: Our love based on faith and Gods purposes is a two way interactive reality

Romans 8:28And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Matt 21:21And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it willhappen.22And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

  1. 1.   The result of a faithless nation who had rejected their Messiah, also true for individuals.
  2. 2.   In contrast the amazing fruit producing potential of men and women of faith
  3. 3.   He we see that God despises superficial outward appearance and longs for the fruit of faith

What is this faith

persuasion, that is, credence; moral conviction, especially reliance upon Christ for salvation

James 2:19You believe (faith)that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

Thus having faith in God does necessary mean that you will obey and follow Christ.

  1. 1.  Trusting in God’s Word

Heb 11:6  And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.  Interactive faith.

Matt 25:21               His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful (trustworthy); servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Paul reminds us:      1 Cor 4:2  Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. Note: It is our trust worthyness to God which matters not what man thinks of us.

John writing prophetically To the church at Smyrna.

Rev 2:10  Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

Matthew Henry quote:

A crown of life, to reward those who are faithful even unto death, who are faithful till they die, and who part with life itself in fidelity to Christ. The life so worn out in his service, or laid down in his cause, shall be rewarded with another and a much better life that shall be eternal.

The preparation begins by dying to self and putting our trust in God for everything.

  1. 2.  Faith that saves        Peace with God Through Faith

Romans 5:, 1Therefore since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

Justify = To render just or innocent: – free, be righteous.   (Justified through faith nothing else)

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

Isaiah 64:6 “ All our righteousness are as filthy rags”

Justified by Faith

Gal 2: 16we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so

we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of

the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

One Mediator

1 Tim 2:5  For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

The requirement for Salvation:

a)  Believe   = The head

Rom 1017                So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Acts 16:31               “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

Such transformation, the response to Gods grace, from a jailor to a joy filled liberated person.

b)   Repent = The heart

2 Pet 3:9  The Lord is not slow to fulfil his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Rom_14:12  So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

c)  Receive = The will

Rev 3:20  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. (The act of surrender)

We are saved not by works but to do good works.

Eph 2:8  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift

of God,9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.10For we are his workmanship, created in

Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

M.H. It was his purpose, to which he prepared us, by blessing us with the knowledge of his will, and his

Holy Spirit producing such a change in us, that we should glorify God by our good conversation, and

perseverance in holiness.

Saving faith always produces good works or fruit             Faith Without Works Is Dead

James 2:14What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can

that faith save him?   Faith must produce something.

Faith is the root that produces the fruit and it is motivated by the heart not the head.

Matt 7: 20 “By their fruits you shall know them”   A tree produces of it’s kind.

What is this fruit of our faith that God looks for ?

       1.A giving compassionate heart.

Matt 10:42And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a

disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

MH Quote Kindnesses shown to Christ’s disciples are valued, not according to the cost

of the gift, but according to the love and affection of the giver.

This is giving that flows out from our love of God and it is this that will be rewarded.

2.Christlike Character

Gal 5: 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23   gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Pauls attitude:

Php 3:7  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

Pauls point is clear. It is in Christ that our character and potential is forged and no other.

  1. 3.  Obedience to Gods Instruction.

1 John 2:4Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

(a)“You shall be holy, for I am holy.”   1 Pet 1:16

(b) Pray without ceasing                         1 Thes 5:17

(c)    Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, Heb 10:25

(d) you will be my witnesses                Acts 1:8

(e)A giving heart  Luke 6:38give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken

together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

  1. 4.    A Willing Witness

John 15:16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

How are we to be most effective?

John15:34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you

also are to love one another.35By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
